how to take photos like a beauty guru (for noobs)

If you're anything like me you can't help but be captivated by the instagram swag of the likes of Alissa Ashley, NikkieTutorials, Jackie Aina, and Jaclyn Hill. Aside from banging makeup sklls, these ladies have perfected the art of the "selfie". Being that I'm somewhat of a novice blogger and microinfluencer, I decided to do a little research and try my hand at capturing a guru worthy shot.

After scrolling through what seemed like thousands of photos on IG, I was able to identify a few trends...trends that I like to refer to as: the beauty guru selfie ingredients-or...something.

Image obtained from Alissa Ashley's IG: purely for educational purposes.

Lighting on these pics are always impeccable. Minimal shadows and equally distributed all around (including under the face).

Whether it be a bold lip (a la Alissa), blinding holo highlight, fierce cut crease, or a hypnotizing filter, every one of the beauty gurus I studied had some pop of color included in their photos (double points if it shimmers).

Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline? In my case it's more than likely facetune but whatevs. They all have seemingly flawless skin with no pores, no under-eye circles, and zero debt.

Focus is always super strategic. Usually blurred background which can be achieved by hella expensive camera lenses or by carefully positioning yourself an arm to arm 1/2 length distance from a wall, background, etc.

LIGHTING: Cheap ring light I bought on Amazon, but you don't need a fancy light, natural light from a window works just as well! You can always increase or decrease shadows in a photo editing app later if your images come out too bright or dark.

POP OF COLOR: Colourpop liquid lipstick in Dr. M (about $6)

SMOOTH, FLAWLESS SKIN: Ok so since I'm not blessed with poreless skin I used FaceTune on my iPhone to smooth out my skin and brighten under my eyes. You can get Facetune2 in the Apple Store for free 😉 (if you guys want a detailed blog post or video on how I edit my pics leave a comment below!)

FOCUS: I stood in front of the wall in my dining room and got uncomfortably close to my camera lens with the lens zoomed all the way out. You can replicate this by holding your iPhone arms length (back facing camera) and zooming in on your face which will blur the background a bit.'d I do?! What are some other trends you've noticed in Influencer's IG photos?
